Assam’s Kaziranga National Park Bags 4 Awards for Anti-Poaching Efforts on International Tiger Day

For their dedicated efforts to prevent the poaching of tigers in the region, staff members from the Kaziranga National Park were honored with awards. The awards were presented to constables Shri Gagan Kakati , Shri Debajit Doley, Shri  Sunil Hazarika, and boatman Shri Mintu Das on the occasion of International Tiger Day held on 28th July 2024 during the conference held by the National Tiger Conservation Authority.

National Tiger Conservation Authority or NTCA was formed as a result of Project Tiger in 2005 to monitor the efficiency and compliance of the guidelines of the tiger reserves related to conservation and tourism. A body made to regulate the workings of tiger reserves in the country, NTCA enjoys certain powers under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972, amended 2006 as well.

For their continued efforts towards conservation, the officers were congratulated by Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister of Assam via a post on the social media site X as-

“I am happy to learn that today 6 personnel from @assamforest have received this award from Hon’ble Union Minister Shri @byadavbjp Ji. My compliments to the fortitude displayed by constables- Shri Gagan Kakati, Shri Debajit Doley, Shri Sunil Hazarika; boatman -Shri Mintu Das- and Foresters - Shri  Nayanjyoti Pathak & Shri Bashiram Brahma.”

The officers at Kaziranga National Park were appreciated for their efforts in May when they were able to successfully prevent a poaching event with bravery and quick thinking, and subsequently were also able to recover weapons from the poachers. This kind of dedication showcases the care and concern the frontline staff hold for the conservation of the wildlife at Kaziranga National Park, and their commitment to protect the animals from harm.

Commemorating International Tiger Day, Kaziranga National Park also organized many events on the 28th and 29th of July. Events that were held at the national park include a tribute to Mahir Patir Miri, the first Assamese Assistant Conservator of Forests for his contributions to establish the Kaziranga National Park, street plays to spread awareness about tiger conservation, art and drawing competitions for kids, awareness meetings at colleges, and awarding certificates of appreciation to NSS volunteers for their role in wildlife conservation at their level.

Established in 1905, Kaziranga National Park in Assam is an essential habitat that conserves India’s many wildlife, including the One-horned Rhinoceros, Bengal Tigers, and the Asian Elephants. The national park is also recognized as a world heritage site under UNESCO for containing and conserving the world’s largest population of the One-horned Rhinoceros and for providing a safe habitat for them.
