Kaziranga is Now the Second-Largest Butterfly Habitat in India with 446 Species

Already popular for being home to the largest population of one-horned rhinos, the Kaziranga National Park has named another accolade to itself with its successful wildlife conservation efforts. Butterflies are a significant part of ecology and the indicators of a healthy wildlife in a region. This reporting of 446 butterfly species is based on the studies conducted on butterflies since 2007 in Kaziranga National Park and different parts of Karbi Anglong forest region. From the collective efforts of Dr. Monsoon Jyoti Gogoi, and several other lepidopterists & entomologists from the region, 18 totally new butterfly species in the country including Dark-bordered Hedge Blue, Yellow-tailed Awlking, White Palm Bob, Hill Ace Dwarf Banded Demon, and 14 others were documented.

Kaziranga National Park holds the gift of excellent biodiversity because of its vital location just outside the Himalayan and Patkai mountain range. This gives the wildlife enthusiasts another big reason to visit the park soon.
