Kaziranga is Now the Second-Largest Butterfly Habitat in India with 446 Species
Already popular for being home to the largest population of one-horned rhinos, the Kaziranga National Park has named another accolade to itself with its successful wildlife conservation efforts. In the recent conservation meet of Kaziranga National Park, the officials presented the guidebook with a list of 446 butterfly species recorded in the park. With this count, Kaziranga national park is now the second largest habitat of butterfly species concentration in the country, only second to the Namdapha National Park.
Butterflies are a significant part of ecology and the indicators of a healthy wildlife in a region. This reporting of 446 butterfly species is based on the studies conducted on butterflies since 2007 in Kaziranga National Park and different parts of Karbi Anglong forest region. From the collective efforts of Dr. Monsoon Jyoti Gogoi, and several other lepidopterists & entomologists from the region, 18 totally new butterfly species in the country including Dark-bordered Hedge Blue, Yellow-tailed Awlking, White Palm Bob, Hill Ace Dwarf Banded Demon, and 14 others were documented.
Kaziranga National Park holds the gift of excellent biodiversity because of its vital location just outside the Himalayan and Patkai mountain range. This gives the wildlife enthusiasts another big reason to visit the park soon.
